The E6000 supports gigabit Ethernet (GE) switching modules, fabric channel (FC) switching modules, and straight-through modules. GE and FC switching modules connect to the server blades and management modules (MMs) through the backplane for exchanging data packets, and control and management packets. This provides high-speed data transmission. Straight-through modules connect to the server blades through the backplane for providing external network ports for the server blades.
Switching modules provides three switching planes A, B, and C that are independent of each other. The three switching planes are described as follows:
* Plane A consists of the switching modules installed in slots A1 and A2.
* Plane B consists of the switching modules installed in slots B1 and B2.
* Plane C consists of the switching modules installed in slots C1 and C2.
Switching plane A (slots A1 and A2) supports GE switching modules. Switching planes B (slots B1 and B2) and C (C1 and C2) are high-speed switching planes that support 10 GE, 4.25 G FC, and 20 G InfiniBand switching modules and are backward compatible with GE or FC switching modules. Figure 1 shows the slot numbers of switching modules. Each switching module slot connects to the 10 slots of server blades.
